Along with the spread of the Coronavirus on Long Island, there has also been a spread of hateful messages and stereotypes about the Jewish and Chinese communities. On Monday, May 18, 2020, HMTC presented a virtual panel discussion on “Combating Hate as we Combat COVID-19: The Response in the Local Jewish and Chinese Communities. Co-sponsors of this program along with HMTC, were the Chinese American Association of North Hempstead (CAANH), the Long Island Chinese American Association (LICAA), the Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island (JCRC-LI), the American Jewish Committee Long Island Region (AJC), and the Nassau County Office of Asian American Affairs.
Steven Markowitz, Chair of the HMTC, welcomed participants. Opening remarks were given by Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. The panel members were:
Christine Liu, a board member and the secretary of the Chinese American Association of North Hempstead. She is also the President of the Herricks Chinese Association and the Vice Chair of the Nassau County Asian Advisory Council.
Dandan Zou, is a journalist at Newsday, where she focuses on the town of North Hempstead. Her stories have included coverage of the COVID-19 virus and reactions in the Chinese community. Before joining Newsday, she worked in the Washington, DC area and in Sichaun, China.
Rabbi Tuvia Teldon, is the Executive Director of Chabad Lubavitch of Long Island and oversees the 38 Chabad Centers around Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
Rabbi Howard Stecker, is the Senior Rabbi of Temple Israel of Great Neck, a congregation he has led for 17 years.
