HMTC on The US National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism
On Long Island as elsewhere in New York and throughout the United States, we are experiencing a distressing rise in antisemitism. In 2022, the US saw its largest-ever number of antisemitic incidents (nearly 3,700) (ADL). Thus, this alarming rise in hateful speech and actions against Jews began well before October 7, 2023, when members of Hamas murdered roughly 1,200 Israelis, triggering a devastating war between the parties. Between October 7, 2023, and Dec. 7, 2023, over 2,000 antisemitic incidents occurred in the US, up from 465 such incidents during the same period in 2022 (a 337-percent increase year-over-year) (ADL).
The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County thus commends the White House for developing the first-ever national strategy for fighting hatred of Jews. The plan outlines a robust and wide-ranging U.S. government-led effort to fight antisemitism. The strategy “advances a whole-of-society approach to countering antisemitism, resting on four pillars:
Increase awareness and understanding of antisemitism, including its threat to America, and broaden appreciation of Jewish American heritage.
Improve safety and security for Jewish communities.
Reverse the normalization of antisemitism and counter antisemitic discrimination.
Build cross-community solidarity and collective action to counter hate.”
We encourage you to read The U.S. National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism report and learn how you can take steps in your community to counter antisemitism and hate.
The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center is dedicated to educating students and the community about the atrocities of the Holocaust and the importance of tolerance and respect for all people. HMTC serves as a valuable resource for school programs, lectures, training, and other educational opportunities.
