Immigrant Foods, Memory, and Assimilation: How Ethnic Cuisine Becomes Mainstream

  • The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County Welwyn Preserve 100 Crescent Beach Road, Glen Cove, NY 11542 Glen Cove, NY (map)

Presenters from three ethnic communities on Long Island will talk about a food – bagels, Chinese dumplings, and samosas – that has moved from a rarity outside of their own community to a food that is well-known in the wider population.  After panelists speak about their own personal connection to their particulat food, the audience will sample the foods and be encouraged to share their thoughts about these foods and their own cultural cuisines.  Presenters include Cindy Matte from Bagel Boss of Roslyn, Shirley Shing from the Chinese Center on Long Island, and Rahat Hossain from the Long Island Muslim Society.

Seating is limited.  Please RSVP to (516)571-8040 or programs@hmtcli.org.  $10 suggested donation to attend. *This program is part of HMTC’s “Yiddish Culture Series.”

This program was funded in part by Humanities New York with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
