HMTC is offering free outdoor tours of our Children’s Memorial Garden on Monday, October 11 at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM as part of New York State’s 2021 Fall Path Through History Weekend. The tours will explore the history of the Welwyn Preserve, which was established by Harriet and Harold Pratt in the early 1900s when they built their estate in Glen Cove as part of the development of Long Island’s “gold coast.” They will also explain the history of the garden, carrying the story from Harriet Pratt’s interest in horticulture in the early 20th century, through her involvement in the 1939 World’s Fair, and up to the opening in 2021 of the fully renovated garden that serves as a memorial to the 1.5 million Jewish children murdered during the Holocaust. The tours will explore some of the 14 plaques scattered through the garden that include quotes from Holocaust victims, rescuers, survivors, and resistors, and will focus on the importance of standing up and speaking out against hatred and intolerance in all forms.
